More than a photo

Work that keeps working.

By Skyla is photography backed by years of work in social media, digital strategy and creative campaigns. Whatever you book me for, the work is built to do something once it exists — not just to look good in a folder.

Creative with a purpose.

I care how the work looks, and what it does once it is published. Most of my experience has been inside organizations where content had to reach a specific audience and produce a specific result.

Mia photographing on location with her camera

It started with borrowed cameras.

Several of them, lent by friends while I worked out what I was doing. What began with graduations and sports grew into photography, social content and campaigns—and By Skyla is all of it under one name.

The session, event or content day takes place with clear direction and room for genuine moments.

04

Final photographs or content are delivered through an organized online experience.

Where I work.

Based in Kingsville, Texas and available throughout South Texas for select projects. Travel is available by request.

Where a project needs travel, transportation, fuel, parking, tolls, a rental vehicle or accommodation may be added to the quote. Anything like that is confirmed in writing before you book, so the number you approve is the number you pay.

Let's create something.

Whether you need photographs to keep, content to share or an idea brought to life, tell me what you're working on.

Photo

The moments you want to keep.

Portraits, couples, graduations, athletes, games and events. Some sessions are planned down to the location and the outfit; others are two hours of a day that was going to happen anyway. Both are worth photographing properly.

What each service is

A personal session

You, a couple or a group, at an agreed location and time. Directed, unhurried, built around images you'll want on a wall or a profile.

Athlete portraits

A planned shoot in kit or uniform, built for an athlete's own channels, recruitment or a team's roster set. Not shot during competition.

Live game coverage

I photograph the game as it happens. No direction, no reshoots, and the edit is chosen for action, emotion and usable frames rather than a set list.

Event photography

Coverage of a fixture in time: a ceremony, a launch, a fundraiser, a camp day. Documentary in approach, with a short list of must-have moments agreed in advance.

Media day or team production

A planned production for a group: multiple setups, a shot list, several athletes or staff moving through, and a delivery set organized by person and by use.

What "starting at" means

Every number above is a starting point, not a fixed rate. The final figure depends on how long the session runs, how many people are involved, what you need delivered and where it takes place.

Travel is quoted separately when it's required. Additional session time is available. The number of final images depends on the session and on which frames are genuinely worth keeping—I'd rather deliver a strong set than hit a quota.

Everything is confirmed in writing before any payment is made, so you always know the total before you commit.

Social + Creative

The moments made to be shared.

This is not a folder of clips handed over at the end of the day. Social content is planned before it's shot: what the account is trying to do, who it's talking to, which formats that platform actually rewards, and what you'll have ready to post when it's over.

I've spent the last three years making content inside organizations where it had to perform, not just exist. That's the part most content days are missing.

Published work

Planned, filmed and cut for the platform it ran on

Each of these started as a brief and a plan, not a camera roll. Shot vertical, cut for the feed, and published on the account it was made for.

Wedding content creation

Candid, phone-first coverage of your wedding day, made for sharing. I move through the day capturing the in-between moments—getting ready, the walk in, the toasts, the dance floor—and hand back content that's ready to post while people still want to see it.

What this is not: this is not wedding photography and it is not videography. It doesn't replace your photographer or your filmmaker, and it isn't designed to. It sits alongside them, covering the fast, social, right-now version of the day that a photographer delivering in six weeks cannot.

Wedding content creation is a newer part of By Skyla and I'm taking on a small number of weddings while I build it out. If that sounds like what you're after, tell me about your day.

Starting at $350

Extended coverage, additional deliverables and travel are quoted individually.

Creative

The idea behind it all.

Some projects don't fit a session. They need a concept before anyone picks up a camera: what the idea is, who it's for, what gets made, and how it all comes together on the day.

That's what Creative is. Concept development, production planning and multiple deliverables, handled as one project rather than a booking.

About

It started with borrowed cameras.

Four chapters, in the order they happened.

01 — The beginning

Cameras that belonged to other people.

Not one camera — several, over a couple of years, lent by different friends who were willing to hand over expensive equipment to someone still working out what she was doing with it.

I photographed graduations and sports because those were the things happening around me, and because someone always needed photos of them. I own my own camera now. That matters less than what happened in between.

Mia photographing courtside with her camera

02 — What it became

From graduations to campaigns.

What started as graduation and sports photographs turned into something wider: athletics, higher education, live events, summer camps, digital marketing, social strategy, video and campaigns.

I learned how a photograph works differently on a poster than in a feed. I learned that content which looks good and content which does its job are not automatically the same thing, and that the gap between them is usually a planning problem.

By Skyla brings all of it under one name. The name is new. The work behind it isn’t.

Working the sideline with a camera at a college football game

03 — Where I’m from

Lower Hutt to Kingsville.

I’m from Lower Hutt, in Wellington, New Zealand — Māori, of Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Porou descent. I came to the United States to play NCAA golf and stayed to work.

I earned a B.A. in General Studies with emphases in Political Science and Sociology from Texas A&M University–Kingsville, and graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

Since then I’ve lived and worked in several different parts of the country, which is probably why I’m comfortable arriving somewhere new and finding the story in it quickly.

Mia working on location with a drone controller

04 — How I work

The reaction, not the pose.

The way I work comes down to paying attention. I’m interested in people, and I’m interested in the moments nobody has thought to point a camera at yet — the reaction rather than the pose, the walk back rather than the trophy.

Curiosity has taken me across countries, industries and creative disciplines, and it’s the thing I bring most consistently to a job.

I’m still grateful to the friends who lent me their cameras. I’m also still learning, which I think is the point.

Pricing

Where each service starts, what changes the number, and how the process works. If you'd rather just ask, that's fine too—tell me what you're planning and I'll send a figure back.

"Starting at" means the base for a straightforward version of that service. Time, group size, number of setups, deliverables and location all move it. Nothing is charged that hasn't been agreed in writing first.

Good to know

Travel. Local sessions take place at a set of agreed locations. Travel beyond that is available by request, and any transportation, fuel, parking, tolls, rental vehicle or accommodation costs are added to the quote and confirmed before you book.

Image use. Personal sessions include use for your own personal and social use. Commercial use—advertising, paid promotion, or a business using images to sell something—is licensed separately and priced into the project from the start. If you're a business, assume commercial licensing applies and mention it in your inquiry.

Custom quotes. Tell me the scope, the date and the location. I'll come back with what's included, what it costs and what I'd need from you. Nothing is booked until you've approved it in writing.
